Our Curriculum

Here at Acorns, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilites (SEND), have full and equal access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum.  We comply with our statutory duties under:

  • The Equality Act 2010
  • The SEND Regulations 2014
  • The SEND Code of Practice (0-25 years)

We offer a broad, balanced, and flexible curriculum tailored to individual learning plans. Our approach blends the National Curriculum with a bespoke curriculum, including interventions, sensory activities, and life skills development. We aim to remove barriers to learning, make reasonable adjustments to our curriculum based on children's needs and ensure that our pupils are not disadvantaged in accessing education and can make progress and achieve positive outcomes.  Key features of our inclusive curriculum include:

  • Individual Education Plans: Customised goals and strategies for each pupil.
  • Small Class Sizes: High staff-to-pupil ratios for focused support.
  • Therapeutic Support: working collaboratively with SALT, physio, OT and through ELSA and thrive.
  • Creative and Physical Development: Opportunities for art, music, drama, and adapted physical education.
  • Social and Emotional Learning: Dedicated time for emotional regulation, communication, and social skills.
  • Communication: A total communication approach for all pupils. 
  • Provision:  Access to a range of experiences and opportunities to enable full provision of pupils' EHCPs are delivered, adjustments to the learning environment, adapted teaching materials, use of specialist equipment and outcomes that inform teaching, support and curriculum adaptations.

  • Our school is equipped with dedicated spaces to enhance learning and well-being:
  • Sensory rooms and quiet areas for self-regulation.
  • Accessible outdoor play and nature areas.
  • Assistive technology and adaptive equipment.

Family and Community Engagement

We view families as key partners in each child's education. We foster strong relationships through:

  • Regular communication and progress reviews.
  • Parents and carers groups.
  • School events, performances, and community projects.
